Allergies and my Glee Gum review and giveaway 10/18 CLOSED

There isn't really a connection between allergies and Cerebral Palsy but since my blog is about my life with a child with cerebral palsy and Audrianna just happens to have quite a few allergies I figured why not write about it.   As a infant Audrianna's first allergy was milk she became lactose intolerant around about 5 months old.  Thankfully for us she outgrew it by the time she was 2-3 years old.  Then she developed an egg allergy by the time she was 2.  We knew she was allergic to eggs when she ate scrambled eggs and broke out with a rash all around her face and her lips started to puff up.  It took awhile to convince her dr that she was allergic to eggs.  thankfully I documented with pictures what she looked like after comming in contact with eggs.  So her pediatrician referred us to a allergy specialist and she was giving the rash test thats when we dound out she was allergic to eggs, seafood, borderline allergic to lettuce and tomatoes and quite a few other things.  Did you know someone could be allergic to lettuce? neither did I.  we were told to not let her come in contact with seafood at all shes allergic to tuna and clam but that covers softshell and hardshell fish.  Her father is extremly allergic to seafood and his throat will swell up if he eats it so yeah scary.  as for the borderline allergies of hers she can eat those things but any sign of a reaction and we have to add that to the list of foods she cant have anymore.   Around the time she was 4 she stated with seasonal allergies and medical allergies.  We ended up adding dogs, cats, and tree pollen to the mix mainly birch trees, and then for medicine its morphine, codiene and Botulism toxin type A aka Botox type A.   so when it comes to surgeries it sucks for pain relief and when it comes to grocery shopping theres alot of label reading did you know that worchester sauce has anchovies in it?  Who knew right or that cesar salad dressing also has fish in it.  Or maybe that marshmallows have egg in it, and so do some artificial colors.
Egg allergies actually are one of he most common childhood allergies to.  Both the yolk and the white of eggs are made of numerous proteins and are therefore potentially allergenic, although egg whites cause more reactions than yolks. Although most egg allergies begin in childhood, in rare cases egg allergies develop at older ages. So if you or an adolescent child develop allergy symptoms after consuming eggs, consult an allergist. As many as two-thirds of children who are allergic to eggs outgrow their egg allergies by age seven. Its funny cause Audrianna is allergic to egg yolks and not egg whites.   Some people who are allergic to eggs can be allergic to chicken weird right.  thats because there is a protein that is found both in eggs and in chicken which is alpha-livetin, or chicken serum albumin. Audrianna isn't allergic to chicken but shes not a big fan of eatting chicken either.   She also can not get the flu vaccine so we do instead since she has a weaker immune system.   If your allergic to eggs heres the ingredients you should watch for and avoid.

•Eggs, egg whites, egg yolks, powdered eggs, or any ingredient containing a form of the word "egg"

•Ovoalbumin, ovomucin, ovomucoid, ovovitellin, or any ingredient with the prefix "ovo-" or "ova-" (meaning "egg" in Latin)

•Albumin
•Globulin

•Livetin

•Lysozyme

•Aioli

•Mayonnaise

•Simplesse™

•Meringue

Be aware of the possible presence of eggs in:

•Thickened sauces. Hollandaise, Béarnaise, arlésienne, rémoulade, aïoli, and mayonnaise are among the most common, but numerous sauces are derived from these and may contain eggs. Always check labels and ask before ordering any food with a sauce in a restaurant.

•Baked goods, especially cakes, cookies, zwieback, crackers, pancakes, waffles, doughnuts, and pretzels. Breads with a shiny crust or yellow coloring may have been brushed with an egg wash.

•Noodles and pasta.

•Soups and casseroles, including powdered mixes.

•Meat loaf, meatballs, croquettes, sausages, and similar meat dishes.

•Ice cream (especially Italian-style gelato and high-fat premium brands of ice cream), frozen custard, sherbet, pudding, divinity, jelly beans, filled chocolates, and similar desserts.

•Baking powder.

•Consommé (may be clarified with eggshells).

•Breaded meats or vegetables (may be breaded with eggs, flour, and/or dairy; ask before ordering).

Ok anyways I could go on and on about allergies but I want to get this review and giveaway up that is perfect for anyone with allergies.

Glee Gum does not contain any of the eight major food allergens: milk, egg, fish, Crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, wheat, peanuts, or soybeans. However, all six flavors of Glee Gum contain glucose derived from corn, which may not be safe for individuals with corn allergies. Also, though all Glee Gum is soy free, please note that other products containing soy lecithin are processed in the same facility as Glee Gum. If you have any additional questions related to allergens

I was sent a make your own gummy kit from margurite at glee gum  The box does say ages 8 and up but I figured audrianna might be able to do it.  im gonna add a bunch of pictures so I will review each process.

First we added the the dried seaweed to the bowl of water to soak.
As the seaweed was drying Audrianna cleaned up and then dried her melissa and doud Lacing beads that she wanted to use as molds
Then Audrianna smoothed out the molding starch on a dinner plate of course she had adult supervision :)

Then Audrianna picked out what shape she wanted to try first

Just checking in on the seaweed

The shapes didn't work out the starch stuck to them  But isn't Audrianna to cute sticking out her tongue.  Also the glove on her hand was to cover up her bandaged finger that she sliced open at school the day before and had to go to the ER for stitches.  They sealed it with glue instead.

Pouring in the powdered seaweed in to the 1/2 cup of water

Mixing the dried seaweed

waiting for the mixture to foam

Removed the piece of seaweed as u can see there is still a stray piece and added the colored sugar packet into the mixture.  The reason you don't need the piece of seaweed in there is because it has done its job and the carragean was extracted .

Audriannas initials which were drawn in the starch by an adult and of course the mixture was also poured by an adult.

what it looked like after being in the fridge for 15 minutes

Audrianna wanted to try pouring the mixture as you see it did not come out well.  Which is why I don't reccommend the molding starch for kids under 8.  I would reccomend buying a plastic candy mold.

Other then the reccommendation of using a plastic candy mold if your gonna do this with a kid under 8 years of age.  It was a fun activity and it was a learning experience.  I even mentioned it to her teacher at open house last night and shes interested in it and will be looking into it.  The gummy tasted great the sour crystals were a bit to sour but u can add sugar to the mix before shaking the finished gummies into the sour mixture.  I preferred the taste of the gummies with no sugar or sour crystals on it.  Audrianna liked the sour sugar so much she licked it off the gummy.
